HISTORY

On that faithful day of the 31st of August 1979 when four guys, Richard Arhin, Jesse Nelson, James Gazo Azu and Emmanuel Kormedoda took-off from Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana into the unknown, towards Hamburg in Germany, they were only imagining what the future had in stock. On arrival in Hamburg, the Afro Rock Band ´´Legon`` was formed. This played through Germany, and made trips to Norway and Sweden, from April 1980 for eight months played all over and returned to
Germany on the 22nd of November 1980 with lots of ups and downs. On our return Gazo and Emmanuel brought a set of equipment they acquired in Norway. They continued playing gigs in Germany here and there until the 23rd March 1981 when they played their last gig in Flub-Dub, Lübeck in Germany where the Afro-Rock Band Legon was declared dissolved by the Leader Danny. Hereafter, three of the members got together and continued rehearsing with Drums, Bass and Guitar on their own to keep them in form, musically.

Shortly after, the Manager of the Band Legon approached them, if they knew a band who could fulfill a gig he had pending for Legon. The three Guys Gazo, Emmanuel and Jesse offered to fulfill the gig to avoid any bridge of contract by Legon not playing. The manager first rejected the offer and claimed the suggestion was impossible. He came back later and agreed, he had no other alternative. The gig was scheduled for the 2nd of April 1981 in the Club Rampe, in Hamburg. From this day on, an Afro-Rock-Reggae three piece Band was born.

We gave it the name , the Vitamin that is needed for Peace, Love, Freedom and Happiness. Forget your troubles and problems for these hours and dance.

As a three piece Band we toured all over Germany, playing as often as 20 –25gigs a month. We were fresh and almost wanted by all Club owners, many festivals booked the band in advance to avoid being late. Our first Festival ever played was in Braz in Austria. Due to the fact that our brother Jesse (Deceased) had no Documents to cross the Austrian border, we were hidden amongst the equipments to cross the border, this we did 2 times. Jesse refused the 3rd time, so that a 1 month tour scheduled for Austria had to be cancelled. A hard blow and draw back at the point in time.

In 1983 a Jamaican brother called Ralph Holding Jr. joined the band on Keyboards after a jam session with the band without any rehearsals in Werkstatt 3 in Hamburg, due to the potencial he saw. A phanthastic keyboard player, classically trained. A wonderful musician. His presence actually gave the band it’s musical direction, our African Roots, combined with his Carribean roots made a great amalgamation of African – Carribean rhythms which has given the status of the Rhythm band. We became the pace setters for so many groups which emerged after.

In 1984 we recorded our first Album called Brothers & Sisters, produced and released by World of Music in Kiel. After this we became more active than before and Ralph brought in a wonderful sound engineer, Ulli Thiessen, who gave the band an unforgettable sound quality. Ulli stayed with the band for so many years and is till today a memorable part of the family. At the peak of travelling, our brother Jesse decided to stop active travelling due to private reasons, he made way for another Guitarrist. To bridge the time we invited a brother called Nat Fredua who helped out for some time. We had musicians like Themba Ndlovu from Zimbabwe living in Hamburg at the time, Roykey Wydth from Aruba living in Munich at the time. Meanwhile our brother Richard also came back to join the group in May 1994, playing Saxophone & Congas. It is now time to get a permanent guitarist, so we went to Ghana and brought in our friend and brother Buckie Bastedo direct from Accra, a singer and guitarist in June. We are now set.

A five piece band took-off with full force and determination. We did one tour after the other, through Germany, Austria and Switzerland until the next Album Dzalele (Jah Live) in 1986.

In 1987 we sent the album to Ghana, this became a hit all over the country, it had lots of airplay, to the extent that we were invited in 1988 to Tour the country spreading our message of Brothers & Sisters living in Peace, freedom and Happiness. This was also very successful.

In 1989, the Album Secrets of Life was released, by BMG Ariola. Shortly after, on the 4th of Juli 1989, 2 members, Arhin and Buckie, left the group on personal reasons. A big set back, but as the saying goes, ”where there is a will, there is always a way”. We the never give up ones went on, but at this time we had Spuky Mulemwa from Zambia, a guitarist already in the background who just jumped in to fill the gap so fast, then came our brother Ekow Alabi Savage of Roots Anabo fame on Percussion, Drums and Vocals, this substitutions were so good and so effective that the absence of the 2 were not really felt. Till today the power of the group got stronger than before, a plus indeed. Shortly after the new set up got ready, we were invited by the Ministry of Culture in the Soviet Union for a two weeks tour of the USSR. A very nice experience gained along the way. This set up played till 1991. Ralph Holding jr. after long years of hard work in most recording studios alongside playing with the group said we were fighting a lost battle as Blacks working in the Music industry in Europe, he lost all his hopes in music. He stopped playing music, sold all his equipments and went back home to Jamaica some few years later, where he lives till today. Ralph’s resignation was not only a draw back, but a whole arm was cut off on the musical body of the group, this wound took years to heal, we still miss him till this day. Nevertheless the show must go on. Sledge Wadjatchi jumped in and helped out on the Keyboards, he is still a loyal and reliable member till today. We brought in Dan de Love, a singer from Ghana to take over the frontline, a fantastic singer but this did not workout to our satisfaction, he then went back home after a years work. Sheryl Hacket a wonderful singer with personality helped out lots of times in this year.

The years 1991 till 1994 were the years we would rather like to erase from our history book, but never mind it was part of the chapter.

In 1993 we recorded the album “Togetherness” through abnormal ways and means, excuse me to leave this part of the story out. We released the album on our own, this gave birth to the label Talking Drum Productions. We did a long tour after this which also took us for the first time to England where we did some few shows. This caught on.

In 1994 we recorded the album “One Voice” with Talking Drum and Impact Records as the production and releasing team. The tour of One Voice took us over to England again where we had 28gigs in six weeks including the legendary Glastonbury Festival, playing in a Tent as a break filler, and Africa Oye Festival in Liverpool. The break filling was so hot that we were invited in 1995 this time to play on the main Avalon Stage, a break through in England. We stayed in England and did about 18 shows before coming back to Germany. Also in 1995 our brother Ekow Alabi took a break and tried a project with Reality Brothers, a Berlin based Hip Hop project. He was replaced in the time by Mene Man Hamilton from Reading, England, who took over the frontline. This was another fantastic experience, he did his job very well until our brother Ekow came back in the middle of 1996.

In 1997 we added a second Keyboard player Henry Ben-Acquaah who played with the band from then on. Thus making it a six piece band till today. At points in time we had some session musicians as substitutes for fall-outs due to sickness, family problems etc.

The years 1998 – 1999 were quiet, slow and easy, still working here and there, going ups and downs with the whole music scene in and around Germany.

In the year 2000 we started recording gathered materials for our new album. At the end of the year when the recording almost finished, our brother Spuky decided he wanted to try a solo carreer on his own in his home country Zambia, so he left for Zambia.

In 2001 the CD came out at last and we called it “Crying Out” due to the contents and lyrics of the songs on the album. A huge tour from Mid April till November was ready to take-off.

Trouble spot again, Spuky in Zambia so no Guitarist, Ben on 2nd keyboard could not make it due to Babylonian circumstances. What next? We called on Bertie Connell, who sang on “Reach Out and Touch” on the CD, from Barbados,(Rhapsody) a wonderful singer and Guitarist, he jumped in so we killed 2 birds with a stone, lucky we, and for Ben came a wonderful keyboard player Sello Sihlabeni from Cape Town, South Africa of Makwerhu fame. These 2 substitutes, we will say added more to the spiritual outlook of the Band than ever, the spirit of brotherhood and togetherness returned. The tour we would say is the climax of all that came to pass. The clubs and festivals couldn’t do otherwise than repeat the tour in the year 2002. What a success in our 21st year of existence. Does this show any sign of tiredness?? We don’t think so.

Today can boast of being the oldest and one of the best African Reggae Bands in Germany without a big record company due to age and racial discrimination. They say we’ve been around for too long. We still love what we do and will never give up the fight until the bones are rotten. All this could not happen without the help of brothers, sisters, friends, downfall people, well wishers and love ones.

We are about to say a very big thanks to the following persons, without whose help in one way or the other, be it physical, spiritual or financial, we would not have been where we are today.
